Common Questions

General

As reference, coffee contains around 120-200 mg of caffeine per cup. Black teas have approximately 50 mg of caffeine; green and white teas have around 30 mg of caffeine. Rooibos and herbal teas are all naturally caffeine free.

All of our teas have “best-by” dates printed on the outer package which are determined by the date the tea is freshly packed. The tea will taste its best if consumed by that date. While tea does slowly loose flavor over time, properly-stored tea won’t ever “spoil”, even after the package has been opened. To keep your tea fresh, store it in an air-tight container in a cool, dry place away from strong odors.

Our teas will occasionally vary in flavor for couple of reasons.

First, tea is an agricultural crop that is affected from harvest to harvest by changes in weather conditions, including temperature and levels of precipitation (just like wine grapes!).

Second, we source our whole leaf teas from single gardens, and on occasion, we are forced to find new gardens and new tea crops. Despite these variables, we always endeavor to source quality organic tea that tastes as much like the previous crop as possible.

Where to find us

In addition to being widely served in cafés and restaurants across the U.S., our teas are available in some grocery and specialty stores. However, because these stores buy our tea through distribution, we cannot get you a list of those stores in your area. We do know that Two Leaves tea can be found at some King Soopers, Safeways and Whole Foods.

The best way to get your hands on our tea is to order directly from us at twoleavestea.com, and here's why: many stores only carry up to four flavors of our tea, and we have so much more to offer – multiple sachet flavors, not to mention iced tea, matcha, and tea lattes!

Additionally, we offer free shipping (domestic, excluding HI, AK, PR) on orders $75 or more. And we offer our sachets in bulk, which is actually more cost-effective than buying our teas in stores by the box (check out our Box of 100 Sachets and our Naked Sachet Collection).

We also offer a Loyal-Tea Program. Earn points on every purchase for rewards on future orders!

Also, a little tip for you… if you join our Community in a Cup (e-mail newsletters and promotional blasts), you will receive a coupon for 10% off your first order. And as a subscriber, you'll be the first to hear about all our sales and promotions. Go to twoleavestea.com, scroll to the bottom, and look for the Community in a Cup section.

While we are a small U.S. company, you may be able to find our teas in many fine food stores, cafes, and restaurants throughout Canada. However, we can't point you where exactly, as those stores buy our tea through a distributor. Our primary Canadian distributor for hot teas is Canterbury Coffee, and for our tea lattes it is Cafe Mystique.

Still can't find us? The good news is that you can buy any of our products right here on our website! Join our Loyal-Tea Program and earn points on every purchase!

We do not ship orders beyond the US and Canada due to logistical, financial, and security reasons. We apologize for any disappointment. I hope you can pick some up next time you are stateside!

We are sad to hear that you haven't been able to find us at your local grocery lately. Have you asked your grocer about it?

You can always find all our products here on our website. We have an online rewards program where you can earn points for every dollar you spend to get coupons for dollars off future purchases. Also, we offer free domestic shipping on orders $75 or more (excluding HI, AK, and PR).

Finally, we always encourage customers to let the manager/buyer at your local grocery know that you are interested in purchasing that flavor of Two Leaves and a Bud tea. It can only help us get that tea into the store!

Two Leaves and a Bud was founded in 2004 in Basalt, Colorado by Richard Rosenfeld. He remains the CEO of the company, and our headquarters is still in Basalt! Basalt is located in the Roaring Fork Valley on the western slope of Colorado's Rocky Mountains, about 12 miles northwest of Aspen.

Certifications

Most of our teas are 100% Gluten Free, although they are not certified Gluten Free.

Tea is gluten free by nature, and our all Two Leaves and a Bud hot teas are produced in facilities that only package teas; no other food products are packaged in these facilities. We do not use an outside, 3rd party certifier because all our facilities solely contain tea and therefore are cross-contaminant free.
If you have celiac disease, you may want to avoid our teas with Natural Flavoring and stick to our teas without flavoring.

We offer the following teas without any flavoring: Organic Assam Organic English Breakfast Organic Jasmine Petal Organic Tamayokucha Organic Chamomile Organic Peppermint

All of our tea sachets are Kosher, as well as our iced teas.

Eco-friendly and Microplastics

At Two Leaves and a Bud, we are keenly aware that tea lovers are concerned about the environment because we share those concerns! We strive to make our tea and packaging environmentally friendly, despite added costs.

Two Leaves and a Bud Whole Leaf Tea Sachets
To minimize waste, our teas are packed in a sachet that is certified ASTM D 6400 compostable. The material is made from plants, not petroleum. It will biodegrade into water and CO2 after about one month in a compost-rich with microorganisms at a temperature of 122°F (50°C) and 80 percent humidity. (So home composts likely will not provide the needed environment for the decomposition of these sachets.) This material is safe and non-toxic and doesn’t melt in hot water.

The best way to keep the tea fresh and flavorful is to individually package our sachets. Half of our teas are wrapped in envelopes that are certified compostable, the other half use a material designed to decompose.

Why two different materials? Our teas are packed in two different locations based on where they are sourced in order to reduce transport miles and time from garden to packaging (to keep our tea super fresh), and our packing facilities use different materials for the clear envelopes based on their equipment and resources.

You can identify which teas are packed with which material very easily: Flip over your box of tea. If the tea was packed in Germany, it’s Natureflex. If packed in China, it’s Reverte.

The envelopes made with Natureflex are certified compostable. The renewable raw material used to make these envelopes is non-GMO wood pulp typically sourced from hardwood like eucalyptus from plantations. (The plantations are certified by Forest Stewardship Council® and the PEFC®.) The envelopes will biodegrade in soil, salt water or in an industrial or home compost! The material is food-safe and non-toxic.

The other half of the envelopes are made using Reverte™ — an innovative product line of resin additives used around the world to degrade plastics. Reverte™ is designed to address the terrible problem of plastic bags floating in the sea and harming sea life. This product won’t end up littering the environment, as it will decompose, breaking down completely into CO2, H20, and biomass when the envelopes are exposed to air and natural light. Therefore, it is not designed to degrade in a home compost pile. Reverte™ additives comply with FDA and EC Food Contact regulations and are harmless to humans, animals, and plant life and are non-toxic, leaving no known harmful residues in the soil or waste streams. To learn more about the product visithttp://www.reverteplastics.com/.

We realize these are not perfect solutions, but consider them preferable when evaluated against the alternatives, like foil-lined envelopes – which are neither compostable nor recyclable – used by many tea companies. Even though we are a small company and a tiny user of this type of product, we know our choices make an impact, and so do yours!

Our tea sachets are made from Polylactic acid, also known as PLA. PLA is not made from grains with gluten, but sugarcane which is gluten free by nature; non-toxic and eco friendly.

Our sachets do NOT contain any of the following ingredients:
• celery(not include seed)
• corn or corn products
• egg or egg products
• food grade pigment
• gluten (wheat, barley, rye, triticale, oat, spelt wheat) milk or dairy products
• peanut or peanut products
• seed or seed products poppy, sunflower, sesame)
• crustacean, mollusk
• soybean or soybean products
• sulfite
• almond, Brazil nut, cashew, chestnut, hazelnut, macadamia nut, pecan nut, pistachio, pinon nut, walnut
• wheat or wheat products

In addition, our sachet material and fabric is BPI certified; complying with the specifications established in the American Society for Testing and Materials standard in accordance with the terms and conditions of the “International Biodegradable Products Institute, Inc. Licensing & Certification Program for Consumable Products.”

Our sachet material is made from plants; it's non-toxic and eco-friendly. Our bags are not now, and never have been, made with PET or petroleum-based plastics or nylon.

Our sachets are compostable; they have been designed to decompose into the organic ingredients from which they are made. You can read more about that here.

The method in which our sachet material is manufactured and assembled requires the tag to be lightly attached to the sachet. This is done with an ultrasonic heat-sealing method, not glue or adhesives. That’s the same method used to attach the tag to the string, and the string to the sachet. The string is made of cotton, the tag of paper with a light wax coating.

We appreciate your concern about what you are consuming! We share those concerns and are happy we can tell you that in our 20 years in business we've used zero petroleum-based plastics in our sachets.
